Surface Measurement Systems

For over 30 years, Surface Measurement Systems has been a global leader in advanced gravimetric sorption analyzers for solid-state characterization. Founded on Prof. Daryl Williams’ invention of Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) in 1991, SMS revolutionized sorption analysis with unmatched accuracy and reliability. Since delivering the first DVS instrument to Pfizer in 1992, SMS has expanded its technology portfolio, including pioneering the first commercial Inverse Gas Chromatography (iGC) instrument in 2002. Today, SMS instruments are the industry standard across pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals, aerospace, energy, and other sectors worldwide.

Our Story So Far...

1991

Prof. Daryl Williams invents the revolutionary Dynamic Vapor Sorption technique, achieving a x100 improvement on accuracy and sensitivity.

1992

The very first DVS sorption analyzer is delivered to Pfizer, providing a powerful new tool in their formulation and scale up R&D.

1994

Our North American office opens in Allentown, PA, debuting our techniques and instruments to the research communities of USA & Canada.

2005

Surface Measurement Systems opens the doors on it's new global headquarters in London, bringing together our Office, Lab, Production in London, UK.

2017

SMS debuts a new, multi-purpose range of refined DVS sorption analyzers, offering advanced water and organic solvent sorption measurement.

2018

The company enters India with the the opening of SMS Instruments PVT. Ltd. in Hyderabad, starting an exciting new chapter for SMS.

2023

This prodigious year saw the launch of PCL, our dedicated contract branch, bringing a unique focus to providing advanced materials characterization services.

2023

The DVS Carbon, the world's first CO2 competitive sorption analyzer, was launched to scientific acclaim, breaking new ground in the field of lab-based Carbon Capture analysis.

2024

Surface Measurement Systems establishes itself in China with the opening of SMS Technology Shanghai, headed up by a dedicated local team.

2025

With the addition of the BTA Frontier & MPA Horizon, SMS roster now includes powerful solutions for multi-component gas capture, employing new techniques and instrumental innovations.
